Mary Elizabeth Ellis, an American actress and writer. Her roles as “The Waitress” in FX’s ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, and as Caroline in Fox’s sitcom “New Girl” are her most well-known. She has been playing Lisa Palmer, a horror comedy character on Netflix’s ‘Santa Clarita Diet.’ Ellis was born in Laurel, Mississippi and grew up with a sister. After graduating from Southern Methodist University, Ellis began acting in school. She performed in local stage productions. Later, she pursued acting professionally. Ellis is also a skilled writer. She is also a gymnast and has been teaching gymnastics for around ten years. She is also part of Discount Cruise to Hell, a group that performs as an artist. She is a very health-conscious actress like many others, and she enjoys yoga. Ellis is married to Charlie Day, actor and cum producer. They have one son together.
Career
Mary Elizabeth Ellis was first cast in 2005 in the series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, as “The Waitress”, a role that she continues to play. She made her film debut with “A Quiet Little Marriage” in 2008. It won the Best Narrative Feature Award at the Slamdance Film Festival. The comedy series Perfect Couples, which she starred in in 2011, followed. The actress also played Caroline, Nick’s ex-girlfriend in “New Girl” that year.
Ellis appeared in sitcoms such as ‘Georgia, ‘Up All Night, and ‘Happy Endings’ in the early 2000s. She starred in the sitcom “The Grinder” with Fred Savage and Rob Lowe from 2015 to 2016. She also appeared in the films “Free State of Jones” and “Masterminds” during this time. While “Free State of Jones” is a period war movie that is inspired by the life of Newton Knight, an American soldier cum farmer, Masterminds is a comedy film that is based on The Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery of Oct 1997.
Ellis joined the cast in 2017 of the web-based horror comedy series “Santa Clarita Diet” as Lisa Palmer. She also voiced the episode “Roaches”, of the animated comedy series “Animals”. In 2019, Ellis had a guest appearance in “Margaret Jr.” episode of comedy drama “The Cool Kids”.
The talented actress will soon be seen in “The Truth About Lies”, a romantic comedy where she will share screen time with Odette Annable, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Fran Kranz.
Mary Elizabeth Ellis has performed in many stage plays, including “The Tempest” and “Killer Joe”, the latter of which was premiered at Artists Repertory Theatre Portland’s in 2002.
